Terrain Descriptions

The competition area is quite hilly with large ridges, deep valleys and many erosion gullies.  Most of the area is covered by man-made forest and the vegetation inside may allow you to run in low speed.  The aboriginal vegetation, mainly impassable undergrowth and thickets, can be seen in valleys and along the watercourse.  Nevertheless, the area is well connected by minor vehicular roads and large footpaths which offer good running to the competitors between sites of afforestration area.  Impassable cliffs, large boulders and bare rocks are also common in the area.  To avoid too many details on map, some insignificant features, such as man-made ditches, are not shown.  Beware of deep pits covered by vegetation and danger broken ground … etc. and, lastly, full cover clothing and orienteering shoes with short metal studs are recommended.

Change-over Arrangement

The race begins at 10:00am with a mass start of all Leg 1 runners at designated area. They should enter the mass start area at least 15 minutes before the start to get their E-cards cleared and facilitate the distribution of competition maps by event officials.

In the competition area there will be a radio control located at a point which is approximately 5-10 minutes before finish. When your competition numbers are being announced, please enter the assembly area and get ready to start.

When runners approach the finish, they should punch the last control, and then run down a short chute and tag their next leg runner. Please make sure that you make a successful high-five J with your teammate; failing to make a hand-to-hand clap may risk disqualification. Following the wonderful tag the starting runner will proceed to the map area, get the map and start orienteering. Please make sure that you are taking your own map!!! Meanwhile the finish runner will punch a finish control and then proceed to the results download centre. For those running for the last leg, after punching the last control, just run along the finish chute and punch the finish control – this will be counted as the finish time for the whole team.

12:30pm is the time for leg 2 and leg 3 mass start –the elapsed time of all members of the team will be added up to provide an overall time for the whole team.

Please make sure that you are wearing the correct relay number bib showing your team number and leg, as well as using the correct E-card.  Make sure you get the right map before you actually start the race. Forking system is being used so the same leg runners may be running different routes although each team will do the same orienteering by the end of the race.  Remember to check your control codes and do not blindly follow other orienteers.

The change-over area is within a piece of open land; you may want to bring along a hat or sunscreen. Please be prepared to cheer for your national teams! If you have a big drum, a bell, horn, a loud voice, a camera……bring them; you’ll enjoy having them. This should also be a pleasant locale, a good site for a morning crazy cheering and dashing through the forest! Have fun, and enjoy an exciting morning!!!
