Mr. Birney Memorial Orienteering Score Event was firstly held in 1994 to memorize late Mr. Birney who was the founding President of OAHK in 1981.  Under his 8 years of leadership from 1981 to 1988, orienteering sports flourished in HK with opportunities to hold two international events, i.e. APOC in 1986 and World Cup in 1988.  Due to illness, late Mr Birney passed away in his home Country Britain in August 1994.

Transport :

Competitors who have paid the official bus fee :

1.       Bus ticket will be sent to you with number bib. Please call OAHK (25048112) before 4 October if you do not receive it.

2.       Please wait outside Sai Kung Tang Siu Kin Sports Ground and get on the official bus according to the time print on the ticket.

3.       After get off the official bus at Hoi Ha Village, walk 30-40 mins along the Tai Tan Country Trail to Event Centre.

 

Other competitors may use the following two routes to Event Centre :    

 

       

1.   Take the ferry from Wong Shek Pier to Wan Tsai (Nam Fung Wan).

      Walk 10 mins after you get off the ferry.

      First ferry 9:50 a.m. ; Trip takes about 15 mins ; Hourly

2.   Walk 30-40 mins along the Tai Tan Country Trail from Hoi Ha Village.

      Green mini bus no 7, from Sai Kung Town to Hoi Ha Village.

      First bus 7:55 a.m. ; Trip takes about 20 mins ;

 

In that afternoon, Tsui Wah Ferry will arrange extra schedule and sail directly from Wan Tsai to Wong Shek Pier.

 

Event Centre :

1.   The event centre is located at Wan Tsai West Campsite (G.R. 50Q KK260866).

2.   Toilet and shower facilities are near by the event centre.

3.   No food or drinking water supply in the event centre. The nearest food store is in Hoi Ha Village. Bring your own food and drinking water if needed.

4.   Luggage storage service will not be provided. The organiser will not be responsible to loss of personal property. Bringing valuables to the event centre is not recommended.

5.   Please keep the event centre clean and bring your litter home.

6.   First Aid and Sports Physiotherapy service will be provided in the event centre.

7.   Official time will be displayed in the event centre.

8.   Competitors are allowed to camp in the designated campsites (Wan Tsai South & West Campsite) before the competition. But if you enter the competition area outside the camping ground, toilet and the main path to the event centre, you will be disqualified.

 

Registration :

1.   Registry is at the Event Centre.

2.   Number bib will be sent to all the competitors. Please call OAHK (25048112) before 4 October if you do not receive it. Re-issue request after deadline or on site will charge HKD $5 each.

3.   a) Competitors who registered to use E-Card provided by the organiser, please go to the Registry to sign out the E-Card.

      b) Competitors who use their own E-Card which registered in the entry from, do not need to go to the Registry.

4.   If competitors forget to bring their own E-Card and need to borrow from the organiser, they need to pay HKD$50 rental fee and HKD$250 deposit. The latter will be refundable when card returned. Spare cards are limited and will be served on a first-come-first-serve basis.

5.   Please check if your E-Card number is correct.

6.   Backup label and safety pins are available at the Registry.

7.   Please put backup label on the E-Card and write the competitor number on it.

8.   Competitors may use the “Record Eraser” near the Registry to erase the record in the E-Card.

 

Competition Area and Map Information :

1.   The competition area consists of 3 sections: southwest (Lo Tsai Shek) and north (Wan Tsai) sections are covered by rough open land and dense vegetation. The central section used to be a land-based borrow area. When the project completed, it was converted into afforestation area with large camping facilities, a natural trail and a mountain bike trail.

2.   In southwest section of the competition area, there are baby tree plantings on northward spurs (north of Lo Tsai Shek). The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department requests to restrict competitors entering this area.  The exact boundary of the restricted area will be shown at the Event Center. During the race, competitors entering southwest section (south of Lo Tsai Shek) should take footpath not covered by the restricted area.

3.   The central and northern sections of the competition area are covered by the Sai Kung West Country Park (Wan Tsai Extension) Mountain Bike Trail. Competitors please beware of mountain bike activities.

4.   Dry ditches of 0.5m - 1m depth are not marked on the map. Also some ditches are covered by dense vegetation.  Be careful when crossing them.

5.   Large female Golden Web spiders, the Nephila Pilipes, are busy in forest knitting webs. When running in forest, competitors please take care and avoid “kiss of the spider woman”.

6.   It will be high tide during the race. Take care and don’t get your feet wet!

7.   Cattle and dogs are often seen wondering in the competition area. Do not frighten them when you encounter one.

8.   The competition area is very popular with hikers and campers during holidays. Competitors should take care of other hikers/campers and yourself. Competitors have no priority in path access.

9.   Control points are scattered far apart.  Good route planning and time management are essential winning strategies.

 

Competitors’ Equipment :

1.   All competitors must put on the number bib in front of their chest, and bring along whistle and compass.

2.   The correct E-Card must be used, exchange of E-Card is not allowed.

3.   Competitors are advised to wear watch, long sleeves sports wear and sports shoes with rugged sole.

4.   Water Point will not be provided, please bring enough water when you start if needed.

 

Start :

1.   The Start is close to the Event Centre.

2.   Please arrive the Start waiting area 20mins before the start time.

3.   Equipment and competitor number must be checked by official before the competitors enter the Start area.

4.   The E-Card must be placed on the “Start Activator” until the red light flashes when entering the Start area.

5.   Map will be issued by official after competitors enter the Start area. Reading the map is not allowed and please put the map on ground.

6.   Official will announce when 1min remain for starting. Competitors can start to read the map and please make sure to get the correct map.

7.   When start signal is given, competitors can start their course and should leave the Start area A.S.A.P.

8.   Latecomers must report to the Start and will be arranged to start by the official.  The time lost will not be compensated

 

Finish :

1.   The Finish is close to the Event Centre.

2.   Competitors must follow the Finish funnel to enter the finish area. Crossing the restricted tape is not allowed.

3.   Competitors of the same team must enter the Finish funnel at the same time.

4.   Due to the race nature, a lot of competitors may return to the Finish in a short period of time. Please be careful.

5.   The E-Card holder should put the E-Card on the “Finish Stopper” when arriving the Finish line,

6.   After crossing the Finish line, E-Card holder please line up and hand in the backup label to the official before leaving the Finish area.

7.   Map will be collected by official if competitors finish before the Start area close. Map will be returned afterward.

8.   All competitors must report to the Finish area before closing ( 1:15 p.m.), even if the competitors have not completed the course or have lost their E-Card.

 

Result Processing :

1.   Result Processing Station is at the Event Centre

2.   After leaving the Finish area, E-Card holder please go to the Result Processing Station where the record in the E-Card will be downloaded.

3.   The E-Card borrow from the Organiser should be returned after download of record.

4.   The split time slip which obtains from the Station is for reference only.

 

Scoring :

1.   The time limit is 60 mins. 10 points will be deducted for each minute of overtime. Less than 1 min. will also be counted as 1 min.

2.   Base on Handicap scoring system, score for Male classes will remain unchanged ( x1 ), while the final score for Female classes will be multiplied ( x1.25 ).

3.   The final score of 5 teams in the Student Classes can be nominated by School Clubs to compete for the Mr. Birney Memorial Shield (School Club)

4.   The final score of 5 teams in the Open Classes can be nominated by Non-School Clubs to compete for the Mr. Birney Memorial Shield (Non-School Club)

5.       The team being nominated must already register their representing club in the entry from.

6.   Club representatives are required to collect Team Nomination Form from the Event Centre. Completed form should be submitted to the Event Centre before 2:00 p.m. on the competition day.

 

Complaints :

1.   Complaints on the event or the result shall be made in writing to the Organiser before 2:00 p.m. on the competition day.  All the complaints will be adjudicated by the Organiser A.S.A.P.

2.   A protest can be made against the Organiser’s decision about a complaint. Protest shall be made in writing to the organiser or a member of the jury within 30 mins. All the protests will be adjudicated by the jury.

 

Competition Rules :

1.   The Orienteering Competition By-law of the OAHK shall apply to this event.

2.   Substitute participation was prohibited. Results of both parties in OAHK events for the whole season would be cancelled in case of finding.

3.   Team members could not be apart for more than 10m during the course..

4.   Apart from the map and the mentioned equipment, no other technical equipment or aids can be used.

5.   Competitors are not allowed to move any control points or other facilities. The Organiser will claim compensation if any damage is found.

6.   Competitors must report to the Finish area even if they have not completed the course or have lost their E-Card. Otherwise, they are considered “MISSING”.

7.   Competitors should obey the instruction from the officials. Violation of competition rules will lead to disqualification or cancellation of result.

8.   Competitors must observe the general Country Code. Protect countryside and preserve the natural landscapes.

9.   All competitors must respect other country park users. Neither Organiser nor competitors have priority in using the competition area.

10.  Any change in this Event Information will be displayed at the event centre on the competition day.

 

Remarks :

1.   If a thunderstorm signal, any rainstorm warning or the No.3 (or above) tropical cyclone warning signal is in effect at 7:00 a.m. on the competition day, the event will be postponed. Further arrangement will be announced in the OAHK web-site.

2.   In case of injury or under emergency situation, please use your whistle to send out international SOS signal ( 6 beeps repeated every minute ). Keep calm and wait for assistance from official.

3.   In case of lost or damage of E-Card provided by the Organiser, competitor must reimburse HK$300 .00 to OAHK.

4.   All competitors shall be responsible for their own safety and legal responsibility. The Organiser will not bear any responsibilities.

5.   If there is any change in this Event Information, the version displayed on the competition day will be conclusive.
